Spreading Goodwill When Luggage Breaks

I was in an airport in Atlanta several years ago. While waiting for my flight I saw a woman who was traveling with five little children. Of the children who were old enough to walk, each was carrying a piece of cheap luggage; the kind they sell for overnight trips to grandma’s house, and the like. Well, anyway, her little boy, who looked to be about ten, dropped his suitcase and it broke. His belongings scattered and he started to cry. Mom was stressed and was trying to calm her son while holding her baby and the toddlers were trying to escape to the nearby candy and bookstore. I offered to help and at first she refused – afraid of my intentions, but I persisted. I had purchased a medium sized tote bag while on my trip and I picked up the young man’s belongings, put them in that tote bag, gave him a hug and told him that someday when he was older, he was to repay the favor to someone in need.
