Outwitting the Northern Pike
Weather influences how best to catch a northern pike. In hot weather, these fish aggressively attack any lure in their sight, so the best option is to cast a lure that covers a lot of water. Do not spend too much time in any one spot; if nothing takes your lure in three casts, move on or allow your lure to sink deeper. In most lakes, northern pike will congregate along the weedlines, moving deeper as the temperature rises. Finding them is a matter of locating the weedline and working incrementally deeper. In this situation, jigging a 3/8 oz. jighead off the bottom in 3-4 foot pulls or trolling a deep running crankbait will keep the lure in the strike zone and catch more fish.
