Having a pet turtle can seem like a really cool idea if you have never had one before. Compared to a dog or even a cat, turtles would seem to be so much easier to care for. Well, that is only partly true.

Turtles can easily live 30-40 years so they are no “short term” pets by any means. Also, turtles as pets will require an expense on your part in keeping them healthy. You’ll have food, equipment and possible vet expenses to contend with at various times.

And don’t forget that turtles can be messy at times, especially at meal times. Regardless of how well filtered your tank is, turtles will still make a mess in it real quick. Plan on cleaning it at least once a week.
