Stretch Marks:What collagen has to do with stretch marks.

When the inner layer of the skin, the dermis, is overstretched, it loses elasticity resulting into the formation of stretch marks. Collagen is the protein network responsible for supporting tissues, cells, organs and bone structure as well. This protein consists of up to 75% of healthy skin so that when the collagen structure is disrupted, it affects the health of the skin. The results of damaged collagen include wrinkled skin and fine lines. There are several conditions that cause the damage of collagen such as extreme weight gain or loss, ultra violet radiation on the skin as well as hormones during pregnancy. The hormones soften the collagen network of fibres thus reducing significantly the skin’s firmness and resulting into stretch marks.Collagen is therefore very helpful in preventing and removing stretch marks. Ensure that you promote the formation of new collagen in your body through a rich diet and especially vitamin C.
