Predicting The Success Of Prostrate Cancer Surgery
Because of the unpredictable nature of prostate cancer it is not always easy to determine the best treatment for an individual patient and, for example, to know whether surgery itself is likely to cure the problem or should be used in combination with other forms of treatment. It is also virtually impossible to tell whether or not prostate cancer is likely to return following surgery. This may however be about to change as researchers have identified an immune molecule which is present on the surface of prostate cancer cells and which may be a very good indicator for the recurrence of prostate cancer following surgery. Measuring the levels of this molecule (B7-H3) it may be possible to not only predict the likely recurrence of prostate cancer, but also to use the present of the molecule as a vehicle to itself assist in treating prostrate cancer.
