The Bang of the Gong
There is a wide variety of ethnic musical instruments found in Asia. Asia is considered to have the most interesting history. The gong, a metallic musical instrument that takes the form of a flat metal disc hit with a mallet, is an ever present tool and a witness to this wonderful history. Gongs are generally used in ceremonies in temples and practically any occasion that bears weight on any nation or group of people. The resonating bang of the gong calls forth the attention for miles. The sound of the gong is loud enough to hear from up to 50 miles away. In households, gongs are used to signal that visitors are coming. They are usually found at the entryway and are considered to bring fortune and strength to the family.
